The Rusted Gate Farm building was designed to provide a new hands-on facility for this southern Oregon non-profit organization, whose mission is to promote sustainable farming and ranching practices. Through demonstration, education and participation the goal is to assist small farmers, ranchers and the general public in practical and alternative methods of agriculture and animal husbandry. To complement Rusted Gate Farm’s mission statement, the new facility is certified Net Zero Energy by the Energy Trust of Oregon. There are no fossil fuels used in the building. All of the electrical usage in the building is offset by the roof-mounted and ground-mounted photovoltaic panels. The multi-purpose room provides a space for local non-profits to meet, and the commercial kitchen allows testing, instruction and demonstrations. The farm store provides a space for local producers to showcase their products. Their education programs target local schools with classes and hands-on workshops.
