CoEDI Futurevision Keynote

CoEDI FUTUREVISION Keynote: Spatial Justice in Practice

Presented by Paul Bauknight, Center for Transformative Urban Design & Mary Margaret Zindren, AIA Minnesota.

CE Pending

How can architects move spatial justice from theory into practice? Mary-Margaret Zindren, CAE and Paul Bauknight begin with lessons from an ongoing spatial justice initiative connecting cohorts in Minneapolis, Portland, and Seattle, exploring how built-environment professionals can recognize inequity and become agents of change. Angel Lopez Lopez Sanchez, Assoc. AIA, then joins members of the Portland cohort for a conversation about local challenges, discoveries, and emerging opportunities. Through presentation, panel discussion, and audience Q&A, participants will examine how community engagement, interdisciplinary collaboration, and systems thinking can help architects contribute to healthier, safer, more inclusive, and more equitable communities.

Paul D. Bauknight Jr. is a pioneering force in spatial justice, reimagining the built environment to reflect equity, inclusion, and the aspirations of all people. As the founder and president of the Center for Transformative Urban Design (CTUD), Paul leads a groundbreaking interdisciplinary design justice studio dedicated to reshaping cities, neighborhoods, and towns through the lens of justice and equity.

With over 30 years of experience in community-based design and development, Paul has an unparalleled ability to integrate social, cultural, economic, and spatial systems into holistic solutions that empower communities. His work challenges traditional paradigms in urban design, advocating for policies and practices that dismantle inequities and create spaces that foster belonging and opportunity.

Mary-Margaret Zindren, Hon. AIAMN, CAE is Executive Vice President of AIA Minnesota, and Executive Director of the three local chapters of AIA in Minnesota (AIA Minneapolis, AIA Northern Minnesota, and AIA St. Paul) and of the Minnesota Architectural Foundation.
