History of the Gardens

The Portland Japanese Garden was conceived in the late 1950s by Portland civic leaders to foster cultural understanding and forge a healing bond with Japan following World War II. Formally dedicated in 1963 on the former site of the Washington Park Zoo, the garden officially opened to the public in the summer of 1967.

Renowned Japanese landscape architect Takuma Tono designed the initial 5.5-acre space, incorporating five distinct traditional garden styles to represent different eras of Japanese landscape architecture. Over the decades, the grounds expanded with authentic additions, including the Kashintei Tea House in 1968 and a modern Cultural Village designed by architect Kengo Kuma in 2017. Widely acclaimed by international dignitaries, it is widely considered one of the most authentic Japanese gardens outside of Japan.
