Co-Create: Reimagining Community Engagement for Authentic Design Outcomes

Presented by Stephanie Morales, AIA, NOMA and Alyssa Leeviraphan, Mahlum Architects
1 AIA LU|HSW

How can architects design with communities, not just for them? This interactive session explores how centering lived experience and cultural expertise leads to stronger, more resonant designs. Through the story of Cornelius Elementary - bilingual English-Spanish school serving a predominantly Latine/Hispanic community in Forest Grove, Oregon. We’ll reveal how rethinking traditional engagement can shape bold, culturally reflective spaces, from vibrant materials to generous gathering areas. Participants will learn how to create a multi-faceted community engagement plan to include community partnerships and organizations. They will also leave with actionable strategies for engaging with their community to build trust, meaning, and resilience.
